Working knowledge of light and heavy maintenance equipment and automotive apparatuses.
Skill in the use of a variety of equipment repair tools, and the making of various types of mechanical repair.
Working knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of internal combustion engines and mowing equipment.
Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the profession.
Ability to move heavy objects.
Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions while repairing equipment.
Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work.
Proficiency in computer use, knowledge of Microsoft Office and other applications as specified by supervisor.
Ability to communicate effectively and keep business records.

Spot checks equipment for performance on the course, makes emergency repairs to equipment on the course, and services or supervises servicing of equipment prior to use.

Assistant Golf Course Superintendent Ben Geren Golf Course Ft. Smith, Arkansas
Under limited supervision by the Golf Course
Superintendent, the Assistant Golf Course Superintendent, coordinates and
participates in the work of crews responsible for maintaining turf, irrigation
systems, pesticide applications and maintenance equipment within the County’s
golf course division. The work involves exercising functional and technical
supervision over lower level full-time and seasonal grounds maintenance staff,
operation and preventive maintenance work on a variety of turf care systems and
specialized turf maintenance equipment. The individual in this position will
make fertilizer and chemical applications.
Active participation in the maintenance and repair of the irrigation
system, knowledge of Rainbird satellites as well as central control
system. Learn and assist with basic
equipment maintenance. Responsible for setting up daily duties for staff on job
board and will be involved with renovations including new irrigation,
construction of greens, tees and bunkers, drainage, etc. Lead, plan, train and review the work of crews
responsible for a comprehensive program for maintaining warm season turfgrasses
and all related systems. Plan, direct, and participate in the maintenance
program for turf areas, irrigation systems, pest management programs and
special projects related to the construction, renovation, and repair of turf
areas. Participate in a variety of landscape maintenance
practices. Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy,
proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and
specifications, motivating employees to achieve peak productivity and
performance; trains personnel in correct and safe operating procedures;
disseminate and interpret instructions provided to employees using appropriate
forms of communication. Surveys turf areas to determine irrigation
requirements for various growing conditions, develops an appropriate watering
plan, and accurately operates, programs, or adjusts controllers for automated
systems or hand waters turf daily as required. Installs, troubleshoots and repairs broken water
lines, valves, heads for sprinkling system and performs related work to
maintain efficient operation of the golf course irrigation system. Oversees the application of herbicides, pesticides,
and fertilizers; ensure compliance with established safety procedures. Collect soil samples for analysis and
interpret results in order to treat soil; decide appropriate type and quantity
of fertilizer and herbicide to be applied to turf. Operates equipment to apply
these chemicals and fertilizers to grass for the control of weeds, pests and
grass diseases. Maintain department records for chemical applications and
inventory. Oversees, and participates in major golf course
renovation projects, as assigned; schedules, facilitates, oversees, and quality
controls reconstruction activities, including the work of external contractors. Operates and maintains maintenance equipment, parts
and supplies. Performs minor maintenance tasks on motorized
equipment such as cleaning, greasing, sharpening blades, and making tire
repairs. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations,
decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively
and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service. KNOWLEDGE OF: Turf management/maintenance practices and irrigations
systems is required. Safe and efficient operation of various types of
powered or walk behind turf care equipment including mowers, verticut machines,
top dressing equipment, aerators, seeders, sod cutters, sprayers, utility
vehicles, dump trucks or tractors. Maintaining and managing inventory of turf maintenance
equipment, parts and supplies SKILLED
IN: Possession of a strong mechanical aptitude, robust
organizational skills and highly effective supervisory, motivational,
communication and computer skills. The ability to participate in a variety of golf course
maintenance duties including chemical and fertilizer applications. changing
cups, sod removal/installation and hand watering turf. ABILITY TO: Judge distances accurately, to maintain equipment, to
follow department policies, and to read, interpret and communicate
instructions, maps, manuals and schematics as required. Independently and professionally identify, evaluate
and resolve problems, issues, or scenarios that occur on the golf course. Understand the basic rules of golf and assist with

Geren Golf Course was established in 1972. The golf course pursues excellence
in growing the game of golf in Sebastian County and the greater Arkansas River
Valley area. Ben Geren Golf Course
consists of 27-holes, the Willow, Magnolia and Silo nines, and the shorter
nine-hole Community Complex, which is home to the Ben Geren Youth Golf
Academy. Jeff Brauer designed the Silo
nine, Jim Holmes designed the Willow and Magnolia nines and the Community
Complex was designed by Day-Blalock. The
courses feature MiniVerde Ultradwarf bermudagrass greens and bermudagrass

The course was built by golfers, for golfers. With numerous sand bunkers, water on eleven holes, sparkling lakes and streams, and fairways lined with loblolly pines the Country Club of Arkansas captures the majestic beauty of central Arkansas. Position Description The Assistant Superintendent reports directly to the Golf Course Superintendent. He or she will assist with scheduling, performing, and supervising all golf course maintenance activities. This includes but is not limited to employee management/supervision, fertilizer/pesticide applications, daily water management, irrigation diagnosis/repair, and communicating with various outside contractors and club personnel. Education/Experience Must possess either a two-year certificate, an Associates, or Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Turfgrass management, or 3 plus years of experience in Golf Course Maintenance. Certificates/Licenses Must have valid driver’s license and ability to obtain an Arkansas Pesticide Applicators License.
